Confessions of a Talented Mind: Swizz Beatz

[Via Uptown Magazine] Once a beatmaker for Ruff Ryders, Swizz Beatz is now a veritable bon vivant—he collects original Warhols, snagged a 2010 Grammy with Jay-Z for “On to the Next One,” and married Alicia Keys. Next up: his second solo album, Haute Living, a smorgasbord of sound (“Its Coldplaymeets Boogie Down Productions”) featuring megawattage from Kanye Westand Bono. As a designer for Reebok and Aston Martin and a professor at New York University, Swizz (né Kasseem Dean) clearly has the creative brawn to back up his braggadocio. “People play it safe,” he says. “I’m like, ‘F— the rules.’”
My strongest childhood memories are of…
The South Bronx. Keith Haring’s “Crack Is Wack” graffiti on handball courts. I remember playing skelzies and riding BMX bikes. I remember my grandparents calling me through the window telling me it’s time to come inside.
The advice I give to young producers is…
Always stay original. Always push yourself. Where a lot of people go wrong, they listen to too many people when it comes to their life. If I would have listened to everybody, I wouldn’t be Swizz Beatz, I would still be a DJ. Use your own intuition. Use your bones; they will always tell you the truth.
