J. Dilla's Mom Reveals Details On New Album 'Rebirth of Detroit
Mrs. Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancy has confirmed that a new project of brand new, unreleased material from her son, legendary producer J. Dilla, will drop this year.
A new project titled The Rebirth of Detroit is currently being prepared for release through J. Dilla's estate, which controls the rights to the late producer's music.
Only Detroit artists who actually worked with J. Dilla are being featured on the new project, according to Mrs. Yancy.
"It's a tribute from the heart and soul of these people," Ma Dukes told AllHipHop.com in a statement released via video today (April 4th). "It's something different than what's been in the past."
One of the goal's of The Rebirth of Detroit album is to promote unity within the city's Hip-Hop community.
"This will bring together artists that have drifted away from one another and haven't been able to work with each other lately," Mrs Yancy continued. "It's a healing process for the city…for individuals its going to bring back the love passion and the passion for the music and for what Hip-Hop has to offer…Hip-Hop is a culture, it's not a passing fancy. It's thriving and growing, in a wonderful way. It has a positive message and learning experience for all ages."
Mrs. Yancy also shot down rumors that the new project would feature previously heard material from J. Dilla, who was born James DeWitt Yancy.
The revered producer died in February of 2006 from Lupus.
Mrs Yancy confirmed the material on The Rebirth of Detroit is unreleased, and dubbed the progress on the album thus far, as "spectacular."
"There's a misconception that it has something to do with old projects. This is entirely new, fresh ideas, energetic, fresh and gifted. It is titled The Rebirth of Detroit, so no one will get it twisted," Mrs Yancy clarified.
The Rebirth of Detroit is slated to be released this Fall.
