UK Rapper Tinie Tempah Cops First Pair Of 'Marty McFly Nikes' For $37K
Nike's extremely limited release of the 2011 Nike Mag (from "Back To The Future II") had the Internet going nuts over the past week, after the company unveiled news that pairs were going to be auctioned off on eBay.Not only were fans of the 1980s film series excited, but sneakerheads went nuts ... simply because the "Back To The Future" kicks have been the holy grail for collectors forever.
The hype surrounding the sneaker release has paid off for Michael J. Fox's foundation ... and paid off big TIME!
The first pair of Mags -- only 1,500 are being sold -- was auctioned off in a live charity auction in Los Angeles Thursday night (September 8) for a reported $37,500.
Who copped them? British rapper Tinie Tempah.
A rep for the rapper told TMZ that Tinie is a series shoe collector, and when he saw them at the auction ... he had to have them.
Tinie didn't boast about the purchase on Twitter (@TinieTempah). The only mention of it was his reaction to being on TMZ.com: "Oh Lord, Mama.... I'm on TMZ!"
The remaining pairs will continue to be auctioned off through eBay's Fashion Vault, until September 18th. Each day, 150 pairs will go up for auction ... and they're aren't going cheap -- well over $5,000 and up.
All proceeds will benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation, and Fox himself, revealed during his appearance on the "Late Show With David Letterman" that Google's founders have agreed to match the amount the auction brings in.
